What are Softball Performance Centres?

Softball Ontario is providing a LTPD aligned training opportunity for Train2Train (U14 and U16) and Train2Compete (U18) softball players (female and male) at three (3) locations in Ontario:  Ingersoll, Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Napanee.

The Softball Performance Centre staff will create a training plan that is based on the following guiding principles for Train2Train:

  1. Fun - balance between participation and competition 
  2. Play autonomy is developed 
  3. Individual and Team Development with coping in a competitive environment 
  4. Advancing softball skills and strategies 
  5. Talent indentification procses seleces players for enrichment program

The Softball Performance Centre staff will create a training plan that is based on the following guiding principles for Train2Compete:

  1. Skill Development- reinforced under competitive conditions
  2. Player autonomy development is continued
  3. Players specialize in softball and 1 position but play 1-2 other positions
  4. Softball specific and position specific training and testing is increased
  5. Individualized instruction and preparation address each players individual needs, strengths and weakness

The Softball Ontario’s Softball Performance Centres are administered by Softball Ontario’s Long Term Player Development Technical Committee and consists of the following members:

Softball Ontario LTPD Technical Committee’s mandate is to review all softball player development clinics to ensure that Softball has a training program for each stage/level; that each training program is age appropriate, that the training path is clear and is available to all softball members. 

The Committee is charged with reviewing and evaluating all LTPD materials, including not limited to: Softball Canada’s LTPD Guide, Softball Canada’s Coaches Guides and Softball Canada’s Skills Matrix. This Committee will share best practices on LTPD alignment.

  • Advancing softball skills and strategies

  • Refine FUNdamnetals
  • Develop Advanced softball skills
  • Develop softball-specific mental skills
  • Preparation for optional performance in competition

Softball Performance Train2Train Training To-Do List

Each Softball Performance Centre will offer the same programming just in three (3) different locations and will include: 

  • Consolidate all fundamental softball skills and tactics/strategies and introduce advanced softball skills tactics/strategies  
  • Develop strength using a formal weight training under the supervision of a qualified fitness instructor  
  • Include flexibility training due to physical changes 
  • Further develop speed by using specific activities that focus on agility, quickness and change in direction  
  • Introduce and develop softball-specific mental skills

Softball Performance Train2Compete Training To-Do List

Each Softball Performance Centre will offer the same programming just in three (3) different locations and will include: 

  • Provide a year-round, high-intensity training program that includes softball-specific training and testing
  • Teach player, who are no proficient as performing fundamental and advanced softball-specific skills, to perform thos skills under a variety of conditions during training and competitions
  • Place special emphasis on optimum preparation by modelling high-level competitions in training
  • Individually tailor to a greater degree fitness programs, recovery programs, psychological prepartion, and techncial development to meet the players individual needs and address each player's strengths and weakness
  • Utilize multiple periodization as the optimal framework of preparation for learning to taper and peak for important competitions
  • Change the training to competition ratio to 50% training to develop technical and tactical skills and improving fitness and to 50% competition and competition specific training
  • Conduct critical evaluation of the program at regular intervals throughout the season with coach and player(s) throughly examining competition results, achievement of team and individuals goals and how the player and team prepared

  • Sport Science Experts: Strength/Conditioning Expert, Sport Psychology, Nutritionist, Athletic Therapist
