Softball Ontario is happy to announce that we will be hosting a Basic Scorekeeping Clinic on Sunday, February 26, 2012. The clinic, taught by Softball Ontario Qualified Instructor Andrea Henry, will take place at the Sport Alliance Building in Toronto from 9 AM – 1 PM.
Anyone keeping score – whether for a team, tournaments or for their personal information should attend the Basic Scorekeeping Clinic. Accurate scorekeeping is important for naming award winners, applying for scholarships and even deciding the outcome of games. This clinic deals with all notations need to keep score properly, from the basic scoring of hits, walks and strike-outs to marking errors and runner progression (essential for earned and unearned runs), this clinic covers it all!

Twelve (12) Softball Association Fundamental Excellence (SAFE) Awards are available to qualifying Softball Associations between January 9, 2012 and January 23, 2012!
What is a SAFE Award?
A Softball Association Fundamental Excellence Award is an award of $500 for Softball Associations to use in one of four (4) categories:
- ♦ Volunteer Development
- ♦ Community Coach Development
- ♦ Competitive Coach Development
- ♦ Umpire Development
The Awards will help Softball Associations to train volunteers for the 2012 softball season, thereby increasing their volunteer capacity and the quality of their programs. Softball Associations receiving a SAFE Award will receive a special presentation of a SAFE Award Plaque at one of their Softball Association’s events. NCCP Level III Technical Softball Coaching Clinic

Softball Ontario Coaches Program is happy to announce the NCCP Level III Technical Softball clinic while piloting modules from Competition-Development, Softball will take place on February 24-26, 2012 in conjunction with the Coaching Association of Ontario Coaches Conference in Markham, ON.
The NCCP Level III Technical Softball Clinic covers a variety of topics from scouting to seasonal planning and mental preparation. In order to be eligible to attend the NCCP Level III Technical Softball clinic, a coach must be fully certified at NCCP Level 2 Softball or “Trained” in Competition-Introduction, Softball (What to Coach- 1st weekend, How to Coach- 2nd weekend) and has passed the Make Ethical Decisions on line test). Completion of the NCCP Level III Theory or Competition-Development is recommended by is not a mandatory requirement to attend this clinic.

Softball Ontario would like to share information about Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletics Association (OFSAA)'s subsidy program to Ontario Secondary schools who are interested in hosting an Officiating clinic for students. OFSAA’s goal is to encourage students to get involved in sport as an official by reducing/eliminating the cost barrier associated with certification. The softball community is encouraged to approach their local Secondary school to generate interest to host a Softball Ontario Junior Development Umpire Clinic or an Intermediate Umpire clinic.
The Officiating Clinic Subsidy Program will engage students who are not necessarily interested in being an athlete but still want to be involved in sports (in our case Softball). Other benefits of the program include building student confidence, provide an opportunity for employment and assist in the development of new Umpires in Ontario.

The goal of the On Field Evaluation clinic is provide Softball coaches an opportunity to move from “trained” (attended What to Coach, How to Coach and completed Make Ethical Decision On Line test) status to “certified” status. Softball Ontario is now accepting applications for potential hosts of the national pitching program, CANpitch. Each individual program is designed to be delivered over a 6-week period with a local Regional Pitching Instructor trained by Softball Canada’s Master Pitching Instructors.
CANpitch is Softball Canada’s national pitching program created to provide a nationally standardized curriculum based on Softball Canada’s Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) framework for effective teaching at each level. In the past, few Canadian softball players have been exposed to the pitching position which is one reason why the CANpitch Program is being implemented. CANpitch will assist in producing more skills pitchers in Ontario and increase the level and competition in the younger ages of Softball by identifying key drills that reinforce the proper mechanics and teach the fundamental skills of pitching.

Softball Association programs and activities are often primarily funded by membership revenue, but that along may not support your current offering to the community and sustain future growth. Regardless of the size of your revenue generation project, acquiring funding from external sources is a challenging endeavour. In Generating Revenue: Grants you will build your knowledge and skills in assessing your needs, preparing a strategy, writing a grant proposal, developing a sales pitch, tips for Ontario Trillium Foundation applicants and a list of resources. This is an entry-level program for associations interested in the basics of Grant Funding.

| Softball Ontario launches new Softball Association Volunteer Awards |

Softball Ontario is pleased to announce the launch of a new volunteer recognition program designed to help local Softball Associations recognize the efforts of their volunteers. The new Volunteer Awards are part of Softball Ontario’s Softball Association Fundamental Excellence (SAFE) STAR Program, and will help Softball Associations not only to improve their SAFE STAR Ratings, but also help them to reward and retain their quality volunteers.
The new Volunteer Awards allow Softball Associations to recognize volunteers in two (2) categories:
- • Youth Volunteer of the Year
- Young people from across Ontario are becoming involved with their local Softball Associations and realizing that they can make a difference in their sport. The SAFE STAR Youth Volunteer Awards are an opportunity to recognize the work of young softball volunteers throughout the province.
- Softball Ontario will provide each Softball Association with one (1) SAFE STAR Youth Volunteer Award to be given to a youth volunteer (age 30 or younger) who has made a difference in your Softball Association and helped you to work towards earning or improving your Associations SAFE STAR Rating.
- Each Softball Association’s Award Winner will receive a SAFE Award Youth Volunteer of the Year Certificate, a limited edition SAFE Award Back Pack, and a nomination for the provincial Youth Volunteer of the Year Award
- • Long-Term Player Development Champion
- A Long Term Player Development (LTPD) Champion calls others to action and motivates their peers to work towards improving quality sport in Ontario. By serving as credible role models for LTPD, Champions can get the most out of their peers and, ultimately, activate future LTPD champions.
- Softball Ontario will provide each Softball Association with one (1) SAFE STAR LTPD Champion Award to be given to a volunteer who has made a difference in your Softball Association and helped you to work towards implementing LTPD SAFE STAR deliverables within your Association.
- Each Softball Association’s Award Winner will receive a SAFE Award Long-Term Player Development Champion Certificate, a limited edition SAFE Award Messenger Bag, and a nomination for the provincial Long-Term Player Development Champion Award

Softball Ontario is developing new Certified Softball Administrator Program (CSAP) Workshops during the months of October 2011 to January 2012, and we are looking for volunteers to act as Subject Matter Experts to assist us in their development. Subject Matter Experts will receive an honorarium of $150 in return for assistance in developing the CSAP Workshops.
The Workshops we plan to develop include:
- • Volunteer Management
- The Volunteer Management Workshop would cover volunteer screening, volunteer recognition and retention strategies, and succession planning.
- • Financial Management
- The Financial Management Workshop would address basic recordkeeping, controls & reporting, budget forecasting and budget management.
- • Social Networking 101
- The Social Networking 101 Workshop would provide an introduction to Social Networking, how Social Networking can work for your Softball Association, the different types of Social Networking options, and how to get started in Social Networking.

Softball Ontario is happy to announce the launch of free templates for Softball Associations across Ontario. Your Association can modify and adopt the templates to help you improve your governance, increase your registrations, and better promote your organization. The new templates will also help your Softball Association to work towards becoming a “SAFE Star Rated” Softball Association with Softball Ontario.
"Softball Ontario recognizes that Softball Associations occasionally need assistance in the technical and administrative areas of running a not-for-profit organization," said Rory Quigley, Chairman of Softball Ontario's Participation Committee.
